NEW ORLEANS: GRAMMY nominated singer and television personality Tamar Braxton joined actress and author Amiyah Scott, faith leader Dr. Karri Bryant, and advocate LaDeia Joyce for a candid conversation on Black women’s health during the ESSENCE Festival of Culture 2026.
Hosted by the Global Black Economic Forum (GBEF) and sponsored by Gilead Sciences, the discussion, titled “Sistas, Say It Louder: Reclaiming Power, Pleasure, and Protection in Black Women’s Health,” was moderated by Dr. Toyin Nwafor and focused on breaking stigma, encouraging advocacy, and improving health outcomes within Black communities.
The conversation opened with remarks from Rashad Burgess, Vice President of Corporate Responsibility at Gilead Sciences, who emphasized the importance of expanding equitable healthcare access and creating spaces where honest, community centered conversations can thrive.
Throughout the Reezus speakers shared personal experiences and professional insights while discussing the barriers many Black women continue to face in healthcare. Topics included the importance of self advocacy, building trust with healthcare providers, increasing education around sexual health, and empowering women to make informed decisions about their wellbeing.
Panelists also highlighted how stigma can impact healthcare access and outcomes, encouraging attendees to support one another and continue open conversations that have often been overlooked or avoided.
The discussion reflects the Global Black Economic Forum’s ongoing mission to advance equity through year round programming focused on health, economic empowerment, and issues affecting Black communities. By bringing these conversations to one of the nation’s largest celebrations of Black culture, the organization continues to elevate voices advocating for meaningful change.
As conversations around health equity continue to grow, the panel served as a reminder of the importance of education, community, and ensuring Black women have the resources and support needed to prioritize their health.
